Telehealth and Psychotherapy: Best Practices, Current Research and Ethical Considerations

Workshop Description: Ethical decision making has become very difficult for psychologists as more of the job requires using a variety of technology. Often the technology is so new that psychologists have difficulty learning how to utilize the technology much less be aware of possible ethical issues in its use. One of these expanding areas using technology is providing therapy through telehealth which has been rapidly expanding in clinics, hospitals and private practice. This session will review the major concepts to consider when using technology in the field and specifically providing telehealth services.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to identify services that can be provided by telehealth in clinics and private practice.
2. Participants will be able to describe questions that should be asked prior to using particular technologies to ensure the maintenance of client confidentiality and privacy.
3. Participants will be able to describe issues that need to be considered when deciding to be a virtual psychologist.
4. Participants will be able to describe common legal and ethical pitfalls when using technology and telehealth.

Presenter: Dr. Dan Florell is an Associate Professor in the School Psychology Program at Eastern Kentucky University and he has a private practice that focus on children and adolescents. He has published several journal articles and book chapters on the topics of cyberbullying and the use of technology in professional practice. His research focuses on the effect of technology on adolescents and in the practice of psychology.
