ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, individuals must be interested in the advancement of psychology as a science and as a profession and meet the standards described below.

Full Member/Member*

Those designated as member of the Maine Psychological Association must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have principal residence or employment in Maine; and
  2. a.) Are Fellows or Members of the American Psychological Association; or b.) Possess qualifications equivalent to those required of Fellows or Members of the APA as follows:
  • Hold a doctorate based in part upon a psychological dissertation which is conferred by a graduate school of recognized standing, or
  • Hold a doctorate from a program primarily psychological in content which is conferred by a graduate school of recognized standing; and
  • Are currently engaged in study or professional work that is primarily psychological in nature.

Members are entitled to the rights and privileges of the Association without restriction.

Academician/Researcher Membership

Psychologists who are employed in a full-time faculty or research position and who do not engage in private practice.

Associate Membership

Those designated as Associates of MePA must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have principal residence or employment in Maine; and
  2. Have completed at least two years of graduate work in psychology in a recognized graduate school plus a year of of acceptable experience in professional work that is psychological in nature and are currently engaged in professional or graduate work that is primarily psychological in nature.

Associates participate fully in all Association business and may have voting privileges after five (5) consecutive years in the status of Associate membership, but they may not hold an elective office in the Association.

Postdoc Membership
Those designated as Postdoc Members are completing postdoctoral training or a postdoctoral fellowship in psychology: a temporary period of mentored or supervised training to acquire the skills necessary for your chosen career path. 

First-year Postdocs receive a 75% discount and Second-year Postdocs receive a 50% discount! 

Affiliate Membership

Those who do not possess all the necessary qualifications to be Associates or Members but who support the goals of the Association.

  1. A member who no longer meets the residency or employment requirements for Fellow, Member or Associate.
  2. A person who possess a bachelors degree in a behavioral science program from an accredited college or university and is employed in work which is primarily psychological in nature. (One year of such work under appropriate supervision may be substituted for the college major).
  3. A psychologist who resides in a country other than the U.S.
  4. A graduate or undergraduate student in a psychology program at an accredited college or university outside Maine.
  5. A person teaching one or more psychology courses in a recognized high school within Maine.

Affiliates may not represent themselves as Fellows, Members or Associates of the Association.

Graduate or undergraduate students in a psychology program at an accredited college or university.

Student $0  Graduate or undergraduate students in a psychology program at an accredited college or university.
 Organizations Organizations with five or more psychologists who meet the qualifications of a Member are eligible for a 25% discount on all member dues. Organizations must register and pay for their group members together to qualify. First-year members and post-doc members are not eligible for this additional discount. DEDUCTIBILITY

Association dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution, but may be deducted as an ordinary business expense. MePA estimates that 30% of dues will be allocated to lobbying expenditures, and are not deductible for federal income tax purposes. IRC Sec 162(e)(3).

3 EASY STEPS TO JOIN:

  1. Complete the new membership application: Select your membership category and complete the membership application form below according to the subcategories and applicable discount codes. You will receive login credentials by email and can login in from the top of this page and edit your profile by clicking your name. 
  2. Approval by the MePA Board of Directors: Send your CV in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format to the Executive Director at emcmullan@mepa.org with the subject line: New Member application. 
  3. Welcome to MePA: Once approved as a MePA member, the executive director will activate the membership and you will receive a welcome email.
